“I’m the worst at articulating my job” is something that I thought I had the ability to do. I’ve since realized that it is not so much my job as it is just me. I am terrible at speaking about how I work as a manager, or how I feel about a certain issue, but I do know that I do have a job to do.
If you want to work in a place where your work is appreciated, you need to be able to articulate the specific work that you do. You need to be able to talk about how you make the decisions that you take, and the things that you learn from it. You don’t want to be the guy who can only talk about the work that he does in his spare time.
To be effective, it’s helpful to have a clear idea of what you do and how you do it. If you can show people that you’re the kind of person who can articulate what you do and why you do it, then they will feel more comfortable asking you questions about what you do.
The job of a graphic designer is to create concepts, design logos, and produce advertisements that are engaging and visually appealing. As much as I love our website and the work we do, it’s so easy for me to write a paragraph and send it to the printer, and then spend more time doing work that I hate instead of what I enjoy doing.
I can’t get enough of this. Every time I search for something I want to do, I have to stop myself from thinking about what I’m doing, and ask myself, “Do I really want to do this?” After a few minutes of asking myself the question, I’ll usually find that I do want to do this.
This is also the reason that I believe that most work is done with bad intentions. As I’ve already mentioned, I don’t want to work for a company that expects me to be sitting in a cubicle while they do their work. I want to work for a company that I get to work with every day, that I get to see the fruits of my labor, and the work I do each day.
In the case of Im an avid reader, I could have been working for a publishing house, or a magazine, or a book publisher, or a newspaper, or a comic publisher, or a movie company, or a game company, or a TV station, or a radio station. Im an avid reader for a reason, and I think it makes a difference that I am reading.
I think it’s important that we work in a way that we find our own satisfaction in our work. If we feel like we can’t do our job, I don’t know that I’d feel like I can. I think that’s important because we need to remind ourselves that we are the product of our work. We don’t own the things we make. We don’t own the people we work with either, and we’re not responsible for their actions.
Now that we’ve established that we are the product of our work, how can we do it better? Well, I think it starts with self-awareness. We need to know exactly what we are, and where we are in life. We need to know how we want to be and how we want to see ourselves. If we are not willing to accept ourselves, then we will not be able to accept others.
There’s a lot of advice out there to “be kinder to yourself” and “do more.” I like that advice because I think it takes a lot more than just being nice. It takes a big dose of self-awareness. And we can’t all be nice. We have to be the best version of ourselves. And once we accept that, it frees us up to do things that make us happy instead of just being happy.
